Saucy Ways to Eat Better and Save Money

Everybody enjoys satisfying their taste buds and cravings by eating a scrumptious meal. Whether it’s homemade mac and cheese on a chilly night, fresh green salad with Caesar dressing or pizza with your favorite zesty ranch dip, you know you need the right sauce to elevate your food from plain nice to super yummy.

However, often at the end of our trips to the grocery store, we are left with a lengthy receipt of items bought, a big dent in our bank account and many questions buzzing in our heads. How did the bill reach that high? Did I buy things I shouldn’t have? Why does this always happen? Why are these oh-so-tempting and fancy-named sauces so darn expensive?

Well, the answer is because they are! And they aren’t expensive because of the product it contains but more so because of the brand it belongs to and the designing, packaging, and marketing that went behind it. Knowing that we wish that we could sometimes maybe try making them ourselves yet we are never able to muster up the motivation and effort to do that. Nonetheless, there are solid reasons which should encourage you to replace your store-bought sauces and dips with cheaper, healthier and tastier homemade ones.

When you replace these commonly used dips with your own versions, you will be saving your hard earned money. Secondly, you will be healthier due to the reduction in sugars, salts, vegetable oils, and nutrition-less fillers like gum or starch. And thirdly you will enjoy a more renewed, sensitive and mature taste palate formed by tasting fresh and natural ingredients. The following are some healthy sauces you can easily make at home.

  1. Tomato Sauce: A staple in every American household as we buy 10 billion ounces of it each year, ketchup is found in around 97 percent of our homes.  But such high consumption of store-bought ketchup is unhealthy and unnecessarily expensive. Why waste money on a fancy looking ketchup when you can make the same quality sauce at home for less than a dollar? All you need are some cans of tomatoes and some simple spices. Cook it all together and add flour, or grind veggies like onions or beet for a thicker consistency and a unique flavor. To make it for a sassy dinner party you can experiment with red wine, basil, and parsley.  According to moneypantry.com, homemade ketchup is less than half to a quarter of the cost of a store bought one.

  2. Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise is so commonly used that we just expect it to be there in our fridge all the time, although the commercial versions can be costly, not great in taste and high in calorie and sugar content. However making it is very easy and a person who doesn’t know how to cook can even do it well. With just 5 ingredients and a blender, you will do your pocket and health a big favor especially if you, like most Americans, use it often.

  3. Pesto sauce: While sounding intricate and complex, pasta’s partner – pesto – can be made with any aromatic and tasty green leaf, nutty oil and hard salty cheese. If you have lemon, garlic, salt and olive oil, then you can make this sauce for any budget that you are under. You can add kale and other greens to up the nutritional value, in addition to the standard basil.

  4. Yogurt/Greek Yogurt: Another daily use food product, making yogurt will not only be easy but very cost effective, especially in Greek style. Most people assume that it’s very hard to make Greek yogurt but in fact the opposite is true. Making both types of yogurts is simple, it involves boiling and cooling the milk, mixing in a spoon of yogurt either natural or store bought and then keeping the mixture at a warm temperature for a few hours. That’s your yogurt, now remove whey or the watery liquid from it completely through a sieve, strainer cloth or tissues and what you are left with is the exotic Greek variety. Cost savings for homemade yogurt compared to a store bought one is up to 84%.

  5. Jams, curds and concentrates: Commercial store bought jams often seem extremely cheap but when you take a look at the ingredients there’s hardly 20% fruit. That’s expensive for a load of sugary water with preservatives. Making your marmalade and concentrates at home will be much cheaper, tastier and healthier. However, the tip here is to remember to stick with the fruits with are in season so that you can find them easily and cheaply and make big batches. Curds too are highly priced at stores with low-quality ingredients whereas the same can be made with all organic ingredients at home with less than half the price.

Granola bars, croutons, bread and baby food are some other food and snacks that you can easily make at home for yourself and your family. Remember the bigger your batch the more you save. You can also easily freeze the batches of most of these for later use. This way you will cut down your needless costs and keep your body slim and healthy. In the end, you will find that making more and more of your food at home will reap many benefits to your entire lifestyle.

Every year, most of the Americans celebrate the Memorial Day weekend lavishly and regret later after checking their bank account.  This year, think twice before splurging money on the long Memorial Day weekend fun and frolic.  Celebrating a special day doesn’t always require spending a lot of money.

Many Memorial Day activities are absolutely adorable and won’t break your budget. Here you go:

1. Attend a local Memorial Day event

You may never notice but every year, on Memorial Day, some events usually take place near you. This year, don’t miss them. Catch your nearby Memorial Day event to have some great fun with your family. It can be a street fair, a carnival, a beach BBQ, or an open music program. These types of events are usually complementary or come with very low-cost entry fee. So, keep your eyes on the local newspaper or local listing nearby to know about the timing in detail.

2. Consider a day exploring trip

Why do you think enjoyment comes from only a long trip? Why don’t you think about a day trip to your local areas? Considering a hiking or a day trip to local sightseeing can be the best ways to get energized without spending a lot. Find out a place that is only a couple of hours away from your home. It can be fishing, camping, hiking, beach roaming, and exploring places as well. Pack some meals, water, and other supplies to enjoy some fun-filled time with your dear ones.

3. Host a sports event in your backyard

This year, invite your friends and neighbors to join a sports gathering in your backyard. Planning for a sports event can be the most fun-filled idea staying within the budget. To cut the additional food cost, you can make the event BYOF (bring your own food), or can keep only the basic stuff like lemonade and popcorn. Remember, the more games you plan, the more fun. So, keep some great sports like soccer, running with flag, Kan Jam, Cornhole or Bocce Ball. Don’t forget about little guests. Arrange some sports for children (running, baseball, softball, sit and draw) as well.

4. Have fun with kids at the nearby park

Free activities like cycling, see swaying, and swinging are full of fun for the kids. For working parents, Memorial Day weekend is the ultimate time to visit the local park with kids to experience boundless joy. Flying the kite, Frisbee, soccer ball are also great outdoor fun activities.

People who live in the coastal area are blessed. They can visit the local beach on every occasion for playing with salty water and sand. Enjoying a beach day doesn’t require a huge amount for having fun. You just need swimming gear, towels, and sunscreen with some snacks like sandwiches and coconut water.  However, if you want some floating fun, you can rent a paddle boat, canoe or kayak. You usually need to spend about $10 an hour for renting.

6. Enjoy a movie day on the Memorial Day weekend

The idea of catching up the latest movie with family and having costly snacks is meaningless when you can arrange an in-home movie day. By doing so , you can watch a number of your favorite movies at a cheaper rate. Rent movie from Redbox and stock up your favorite candy to enjoy some good time. You can also order your favorite pizza to say “good bye” to the kitchen for the whole day.

7. Don’t miss the parade

If catching the National Memorial Day parade in Washington DC can’t be possible for you, then check the parades scheduled in your area. At least, you can watch the parade show on TV or online while sitting with your family. Feel the vibes of the Memorial Day in your heart.

You need a break, you deserve a break. it is nearly halfway through the year, and you are busy with work, deadlines, financially stretched, puzzled with overwork; so figure out what to do, where to go and what you can actually afford. Thus you can enjoy a best ever Memorial Day without wasting your hard-earned money.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that around 22.7%, or 54.4 million, of the adult population in the United States have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. They also report that, at the rate at which the disease is currently being diagnoses and by considering the rising trend in the prevalence of arthritis, as much as 78 million American may be diagnosed with arthritis by the year 2040.

Epsom salts are also often recommended to individuals who experience muscle aches and joint pain. Planning a solid financial present is centered around four basic stages of financial management; creating an emergency fund, paying off debts, saving for larger long term goals, and investing in your financial future. Any sound financial plan also includes planning, foresight, and budgeting to get in the clear.

Here is a breakdown of the four stages of financial management that will get you on track to reach all your personal financial goals and dreams.

 

Cure for Money Headaches

Build an emergency fund

Your first step to eliminating money headaches will be saving enough for an emergency fund. This will give you and your family peace of mind to handle much of what life may throw at you in the coming years. This initial savings goal should include enough money to get through at least three months of living expenses in the event that you get laid off or have some other type of emergency, like a car or water heater breakdown. Even if you can’t get this saved straight away, keep it as a target to aim for. Also, make sure that the money is in an easy to access account. In an emergency you will need instant access to these funds. If you have not done so yet, create a workable monthly budget, with a line item for saving.   Tuck away as much as you can each month to stock up your emergency fund as quickly as possible.

Pay off debts

Debts are liabilities. They throw your finance in the red and set you up to pay more than the actual amount of the loan in interest payments over time. The second step, then, in creating a workable long-term financial plan, is to eliminate consumer debts completely. Throw all of your resources at your debts and you will be saving a large chunk of money in interest over time that you can then apply towards other parts of your plan.

When it comes it debts it makes sense to tackle the ones with the highest interest rates first. This usually starts with any retail credit cards you may have, and then goes on from there. Just make sure that you don’t neglect the minimum payments on your other loans and debts while you pay down the first. Any budget you have should include at least the minimum monthly required payments on all of your loan agreements.  Bank credit cards, student debts, and other personal loans should also be on this list. 

If you’re facing heaps of student debt in addition to credit card and personal loans, examine your loan types and current occupation to determine if you qualify for federal loan forgiveness or other types of loan reductions due to your career of choice. Government employees, teachers, those working in the non-profit sector, and certain healthcare workers – like those working in critically identified facilities, community clinics, and hospice care support settings – can qualify for loan reductions or even forgiveness after a period of two to ten years.

Currently, only about one percent of the 33 million people employed in the non-profit and government sectors are benefiting from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Check into the Federal PSLF and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) debt reduction programs to see if you qualify.

Build up your savings

Once you’ve built up your emergency fund, and paid off your consumer debt, you can concentrate on funding additional extras and loftier goals. These immediate savings goals might include:

  • Having enough money to go on a vacation and not have to worry about bills.

  • Saving up some extra cash to have on hand so you don’t have to worry about finances during maternity or paternity leave.

  • Putting together a down payment on a house or other property.

  • Buying a car with cash instead of taking out a loan.

 

Invest

The last stage of the journey is to ensure that you are putting money aside each month for important long-term goals like your children’s college education, pension plans, retirement savings accounts, and other long-term investments.

Consider diversifying your investments into physical properties. You don’t have to have a ton of money to break into the property market. With the explosion of crowd-sourced real-estate funding, like Fundrise, CrowdProperty, and Exceedant, just to name a few, you can now invest in part of a property or development project with as little as $20 and earn as much as 12 percent annual return. Diversifying into property investment early on is a great way to maximize your earnings over time.

Crazy About Kale

I know that the kale craze has been in full swing for a while now, but I must admit that I’m a relatively new convert to its virtues.   For the past several months I have been eating mostly vegetarian meals.  I’ve had three people very close to me diagnosed with various forms of cancer within the last year, so I’m really trying to up my healthy eating game.  Kale is high in vitamin K and iron, and overall has a great nutritional profile, so it’s a no brainer to add it to my diet.

My massage therapist, Julie shared this super-easy and delicious recipe for Mushroom and Kale Saute.  It has only four ingredients: olive oil, red onion, mushrooms, and kale.  Rinse and chop the kale, then lightly coat it with a bit of olive oil and “massage” it.  Chop the red onion and slice the mushrooms.  Heat some olive oil in a skillet.  Add the onions and mushrooms.  If you like your kale on the softer side, add it with the onions and mushrooms.  If you prefer it a bit crunchier, add it for the last 2 or 3 minutes of cook time.  I served mine over quinoa.

I found this delightful recipe on Pinterest from Iowa Girl Eats.  She classifies it as a side dish, but this is also a perfect main dish for vegetarians.  I used Minute Rice’s Multi Grain Medley, which is a staple at my house.   Since I didn’t have pepitas (pumpkin seeds), I used chopped pecans instead.  This has become one of my new favorite dinner recipes!

Cucumber, Kale, & Pineapple Juice

Two months ago, I bought a juicer and many of the recipes I found on Pinterest had kale as an ingredient.  My favorite is super easy: juice one cucumber (peel it if you are not buying organic), 1 cup of pineapple chunks, and 2 cups of kale.  Even my hubby, who usually shuns my healthy juices, likes this one.

Well here is the sad news. A survey by the Canstar Blue Research Company showed that 25% of people who took these shakes added more weight instead of losing. Does this mean the weight loss shakes don’t work? Is there something these people were (not) doing that resulted in the weight gain?
